FALLING WALLS ENGAGE HUB SWEDEN

We recently hosted an online version of the Falling Walls Engage Hub Sweden. Originally planned to take place in Gothenburg, we were faced with the decision of cancelling our event completely or transferring it to a digital space. We we chose the latter option and are thrilled with the outcome of our first ever virtual event.

Together with our Swedish partner Vetenskap & Allmänhet (Public & Science), we brought science engagement practitioners from Sweden and Northern Europe together with our global network of science engagers. Through the online workshops, participants discussed the challenges of engaging the public in science when we cannot meet in person. The event demonstrated the possibilities of engaging in a digital space and inspired conversations on how to maintain a human element to online interactions while remaining inclusive and interactive.

NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY

During these unusual times, the way we engage with others has been transformed to an online space. Many projects within the Falling Walls Engage community have adapted to this new way of engagement. Here are some inspiring ideas from the community:

  • MDR Wissen (Germany) has launched a series of virtual school lessons on YouTube. Martin Lindner is a 2019 Falling Walls Engage finalist and has been involved in producing the educational videos covering the history of epidemics, rainforests, biodiversity, evolution, aquaponics, chemistry, and more.
  • The DreamSpace Academy (Sri Lanka) has set up two new initiatives to tackle the impact of Covid-19. Besides launching an open source respirator mask, they have created a CoronaBot to provide information to the Tamil community in their local language.
  • Pakistan Science Club (Pakistan) has are now teaching science lessons online via Facebook live videos. These videos are providing essential education to children while they are off from school.

How does your project address the new situation? Have you found an entirely different approach? Or maybe you are against moving your initiative online? Reach out to us via engage@falling-walls.com and tell us more!
